Nutrition is an essential ingredient for health. My definition of nutrition incorporates not only foods but also hydration, sleep, relaxation and exercise. No matter what state of health or stage of life, nutrition is crucial for everyone. And different for everyone.
You need an expert to assess and ensure you are getting vital ingredients in your diet and life.

Tip of the month:
Vitamin D
This vitamin has been in the news a lot lately. More and more studies have come out showing more benefits of this vitamin beyond what we knew before. Besides helping to absorb calcium from the digestive track we now know that vitamin D itself has a role in strong bones. The recent studies have linked vitamin D with preventing certain cancers (such as breast cancer), heart disease, diabetes and osteoarthritis. Some research has shown that vitamin D and calcium together can help alleviate PMS symptoms.
Where can you find vitamin D?
Foods that are rich in vitamin D are scarce. Salmon, mackerel, and cod liver oil are the best sources. Fortified milk, as well as some breakfast cereals and fortified orange juice are also good sources.
Sunlight: vitamin D is produced when the skin is exposed to ultraviolet radiation. This is the way we were designed to get vitamin D. This does require UV rays, so noon, in the summer and without sunblock is the way to go. However this poses some risk for skin cancer and other skin damage. Other factors, like how far your geographical location is from the equator (farther away, the less vitamin D you will make) and the fairness of your skin (dark colored skin doesnt produce as much vitamin D), and age (the older you are, the less efficient you are at making vitamin D from sunlight) influence how much D you get from the sun.
Supplements are a logical solution to any of the obstacles that sunlight or lack of food sources provide. A multivitamin with 100% RDA of D is adequate for most people. Ask your doctor if you might be in a high risk group and need more.
