Crohn’s Disease and Nutrition

Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (the other being Colitis). It is a chronic condition where any part of the digestive tract, usually the small intestine, is inflamed. This means that not only is there painful and uncomfortable symptoms but the intestine can’t do its job of absorbing nutrition and calories.

Good nutrition is essential with any disease but especially in this illness:

1. Reduce the symptoms. There is no one-size-fits-all diet for Crohn’s. Each individual needs a personalized diet that his or her body responds to and less symptoms can occur.

2. Replace lost nutrients. Without proper nutrition (in conjunction with the toll the disease takes on the body) other complications and medical conditions and deficiencies will develop. With good nutrition, these complications can be avoided. Dietary recommendations must be individualized. They should be tailored just for you -- depending on which disease you have and what part of your intestine is affected.

3. Promote healing. Certain nutrients are needed to repair the intestine.
